About the Exhibition
Cleanliness and good governance are integral to a prosperous society, shaping public conduct, social interactions, and the effective implementation of welfare programs. One of the key initiatives of the Indian government in this regard is the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which not only had a visible impact on public health, sanitation, and economic growth, but also played a significant role in preserving the nation’s historical archives. As part of this initiative, various government ministries, departments, and public sector undertakings undertook a massive effort between 2021 and 2025 to organize and review outdated records, identifying and transferring over 75,500 historically valuable documents to the National Archives of India (NAI).
The exhibition at the NAI showcases a selection of these records, highlighting the importance of good governance through documentation. It underscores the role of transparency, accountability, and record-keeping in shaping India’s governance. Additionally, the exhibition focuses on the legacies of key leaders like Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose government promoted inclusive growth and infrastructure development, and Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, whose contributions to science, technology, and youth empowerment during his tenure as the President, continue to inspire national progress. The exhibition serves as a testament to the evolving relationship between governance and documentation in preserving the historical legacy of the nation.
The exhibition also offers a comprehensive look at India’s governance and developmental journey, featuring significant contributions from various ministries. The President's Secretariat panel highlights General S.H.F.J. Manekshaw’s elevation to Field Marshal and key official invitations. The Election Commission panel showcases the introduction of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and reforms in the electoral process. The Home Ministry panel covers events like the Vijay Diwas celebrations and the advancement of Panchayati Raj. The Ministry of Power focuses on key projects like the Tehri Dam and Sardar Sarovar Dam. Other panels, including those from the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice, National Archives of India, Ministry of Jal Shakti, and the Ministry of Railways, present documents and initiatives spanning legislative reforms, trade agreements, human rights advocacy, legal changes, archival development, water policy, and railway innovations. This diverse collection highlights India’s progress across key sectors of governance, infrastructure, and international relations.
