Various forms of reference media in the form of Press Lists, Descriptive Lists, Indices, Subject Lists, Transfer Lists are available in the Department and would be provided to the scholar in keeping with his/ her topic of research. A cache of selected records and cartographic records are also available through the intranet facility in the Research Room. For detailed information on the records available in the Private Archives section, Oriental Records Division and microfilms, please refer to the Records holdings section, (Link to Record Holdings).

Abhilekh-Patal, an online search portal has also been started by NAI to give access to its holdings. Abhilekh-Patal contains the reference media of more than 2.3 million files held by the National Archives of India and over 12,000 digitized records are available for online access. CATALOGUE OF RECORDS IN NAI BHOPAL-Descriptive list of Mutiny Papers in the National Archives of India, Bhopal- consist of eight volumes covering the period 16 May 1857 to 6 Dec 1868. This series of descriptive list is the collection of primary records pertaining to the rebellions act Sehore and Berasia and give us a vivid account of fluctuating fortunes of the English forces in Bhopal and surrounding territories it also throw light on activities of Sikandar Begam of Bhopal who remained firm in her loyalty to the British. It also deals primarily with the mutinous activities of the sepoy of Bhopal, the open rebellion of disgruntled jagirdars and measurers taken by Nawab Sikandar Begam to combat the alarming situation in her state. Persian correspondence of the Nawab Sikandar Begam with various officials like Munshi Shakir Ali Bakhshi Murawwat Mohmmed Khan, Commander in chief of Bhopal Army, Munshi Bhawani Prasad, the State Wakil and district collectors enrich the collections. The collection available in the office known as Daftar-I- insha consisting of letters received in the royal court are interesting for understanding the administration of the reign.

EAST INDIA COMPANY RECORDS -Catalogue of Books of Fort William College Collection- the college of Fort William was founded in 1800 by Marquess of Wallesley to commemorate decisive British victory over Tipu Sultan at Seringpatam. The college was the centre of training and imparting education for company’s young civil servants on Indian languages and culture, principles of religion and government in pursuit of earnest desire to consolidate the British power in India. Regulation was passed on 10 July 1800, the Governor General was to be the patron and visitor of the college and the members of the Supreme Council, Judges of the Sadr Diwani Adalat and Sadr Nizamat Adalat were its Governor. The college was located in Writers’ Building in the heart of the metropolis. In 1801 the college humed with the activities of learner professors teachers munshis imparting instructions in various discipline. Further the college was enriched by presents from Oxford University with variety of books. And also with the acquired more books under the instructions from Wellesley, and large number of books and manuscripts from the huge collection of Tipu Sultan. The 742 old and rare books are part of the legacy of the collection transferred to the then Imperial record department. The main highlights are the books on commentaries on the holy scriptures, compendia on traditions, glossaries, lexicons of Persian, Arabic and European languages. These books are divided into nine parts. They contain books on religion-the old and new Testaments, the commentaries on the holy Quran, the books on the traditions, Ethics, languages, Glossaries, Oriental and Occidental grammar, Rhetoric, Prosody. Epistolography, travel and travelogues, geography etc. The historical treasures of Al Masalik al-Mamalik of Khurdazbeh, Kitab al-Jibal of Umar Zimakhshari and Kitab al-Buldan of Yaqubi etc., enriches the collection.

EAST INDIA COMPANY RECORDS -Catalogue of Manuscripts of Fort William College-this catalogue consist of 199 manuscripts in Persian, Arabic, Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali which was large collection with the college of For William in Calcutta which was situated in Writers’ building imparting instructions in oriental studies for the company’s civil servants during 1800 to 1854. The library enriched from contributions and presents from various sources. Rev. David Brown, the Provost of the college issued a notice on 15 Nov 1800 in the ‘Calcutta Gazette’ asking for donation from the public, individuals who were in possession of valuable manuscripts to deposit in the library in the larger interest. Few of the collection are Jawahiri al-Tafsir Li Tohfat al-Amir, commentary of Persian on the Holy Quran by Husain bin Ali al-Waiz al-Kashifi, Mishkat al-Masabih, a collection of traditional sayings of Prophet Muhammad by Shaikh Wali al-din abu and Allah Muhammad bin Abd Allah. Ramzana, in Persian translation of Mahabharata, 35 manuscripts on lexicography in Persian like Burhan-i-Qati, Farhan-i-jahangiri, Garhang-i-Rashidi, Bahar-i-Ajam, Nawadir al-Alfaz and Siraj al-Lughat. Futuhat-i-Makkiya consist of authentic details on various schools of Sufism. Out of the 199 old and rare manuscripts 113 in Persian 65 in Arabic, 12 partly in Persian and Arabic and remaining 9 in Indian languages like Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu and Bengali.

descriptive list consist of six volumes covering the period 1352 to 1850, where in the fifth volume is under process of publication. National Archives of India under the recommendation of the Regional record Survey Committee and the Historical documents purchase committee have acquired from general public by way of gift or purchase the various non-current records of high historical values such as microfilm copies of private papers of former Governor General, Viceroys and Civil Servants of the pre Independence era, personal correspondence, notes, diaries, memorandum, etc., of eminent Indians well known political trials etc. They include documents as farmans parwanas, sanadas, arzis, pattas, tamassuks, farigh-khattis, yad-dashts, qabz-al-wussuls, nishans, chaknamas, bainamas, hibanamas, mahzarnamas, wasiyatnamas and bakshishnamas etc., pertaining to the Mughal period. The importance of these documents lies in the fact that these are witness for the political, administrative, judicial, religious, social and economic condition of India as well her relations with other countries.

These records pertain to the event of great significance for the consolidation of British rule in India such as alleged design of the Almas Ali Khan a powerful revenue official of the Nawab Vazir of Oudh against his master; the withdrawal of the Luchnow residency and the visit of Warren Hestings to Oudh to regulate the affairs of the Nawab Vajir; the second Anglo Mysore war resulting in the treaty of Manglore- correspondence among the three presidency governance; the Anglo French negotiations for implementing the treaty of Versailles later suspended over the Trincomali issue; the long, tedius march of Col. T.D. Pearse (Commander of Bengal from Madras to Midnapora; the appointment of Richard Johnson as Resident at Hyderabad and his efforts to secure the Guntoor Sarkar for the company; the embassies of Maj. J. Browne and James Anderson to Shah Alam II and Mahadji Sindhia respectively and the Bombay Government’s intervention in the dispute between the Sidi of the Janjira and the Puna Darbar; claims to the Peshwaship caused seven-year war between the Marathas and the Company; treaty of Surat signed on 6 March 1775 the Bombay Government agreed to assist Raghunath Rao, later in return ceded the Ireland of Salsette and the port of Bassein to them and made an annual payment of 37 lakhs of rupees;

NATIONAL REGISTER OF PRIVATE RECORDS
The National Register of Private Records is a compilation of lists of records in private hands; it is an outcome of the Regional Records Survey Committees (RRSC) formed on the recommendation of the Indian Historical Records Commission in 1952. The RRSC surveyed historical materials lying in private custody across the country. Most of the records in these collections focus on lists of manuscripts, records, documents etc., pertaining to Modern Indian History. The collection of such information was compiled by National Archives of India during 1959 to 2013. These records are mostly from the states like Bihar, Orissa, Rajasthan, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, etc. There are 23 volumes of National Registers of Private Records comprising information related to the regional records of the states.

ORIENTAL RECORDS -Descriptive list of Miscellaneous Persian Documents – This list comprises of 140 rare and unknown historical documents in Persian language (Shikasta script) which had been issued under the seal of Mughal emperors like Shahjahan, Aurangazeb, Bahadur Shah I, Prince Shuja, Mir Jumla Mauzzam Khan, Nawwab Ali Vardi Khan, Siraj al Daulah of Bengal, Nawwab Wazir of Awadh, British officers and many other rulers of Princely States covering the period 1633-1867.They mainly contain the Farmans, Parwanas, Nishans, Banads, Dastaks, Muchalkas, Arzis, Iqrarnamas, Mahzarnamas etc. One of the interesting documents include a Farman issued by Shahjahan assuring the British that they would not be disturbed in their trading activities for reasons for non-payment of duties.

The descriptive list of Persian correspondence consist of five volume for the period 1801 to 1805. They are the correspondence between the Governor General, Resident and other high official of the company with Emperor Shah Alam II and other Indian rulers, nobles, merchants and bankers and also the neighboring potentates and their high functionaries. It also throws light on the company’s relation with the neighboring states, like Burma, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey referring to the political situation in the this these countries. Cordial relation with the Arab states of Mecca, Muscot, Mocha, Sanna, Eden etc so that it could enlist their support for the expulsion of the French from Egypt. Social and Economic condition, old custom and practices. Society was status ridden and all high personages attached undue importance to pomp and show. Various chief and nobles felt honoured when empty titles were conferred on them by Mughals roifaineant, the old elite borrowed money from Sarafas and Mahajans. Emergence of East India company as a supreme power when Governor General of Marquess Wellesley the political centre of gravity shifted to seat of British Power in Calcutta mostly after victory against Tipu Sultan at Srirangpattanam in 1799. volume three comprises correspondence for the year 1803 of 920 rare unpublished letters written in Persian Shikasta style with diplomatic political and administrative correspondence. Volume four consist of correspondence 1804 with 919 rare unpublished letters in Persian language Shikasta (Cursive) style. Special highlights are Pasha of Baghdad (363-4, 440) and the Raja of Nepal (25, 53-6, 60-2, 233, 303 etc.), News reports of the royal family of Afghanistan (5, 87, 379, 419 etc.). details about campaign waged against the company’s overload ship by the ruler of Indore, Yashwant Rai Holkar resulting in third Anglo Maratha War etc.

SEALS -Catalogue of Seals- The Catalogue of series of seals are in two volumes:        

Volume-I- is the collection of sigillography that is study of seals. This volume deals with the seals of north India from circa third century BC to mid seven century AD covering the medieval and modern periods of Indian history. There are more than ten thousand seals of the foreign origin numbered in this catalogue.       

Volume –II - the seals catalogue contain the detail of seals impressed upon the treaties and correspondence exchange between the officials of the East India Company and potentates of the neighboring countries for the period eighteenth to nineteenth century (1759-1858). British Indian vital role in the expansion of the British Empire as also its commercial relation with Afro-Asian countries are fully reflected in the seals impressed in the records of the foreign department these foreign seals widely differ in the their provenance and relate to Abu Dhabi, Achin,, Afghanistan, Ajma, Bagdad, Basra, Bhutan, Burma, Bushire, Dubai, Hatt and Falna, Jeddah, Iran, Instambul, Johare, Kashgar, Yarkand, Kokand, Malaya, Maldive etc. These seals belong to Kings, Queens, Princes, Princesses, Ministers Envoys, poets, Merchants, Rajgurus, Khwajasaras, Khanazads, Prdhkhidmats etc. They are in the language Arabic, Bhutanies, Burmes, English, Hindi, Malaya, Nepalease, Persian, Sanskrit and Tibetan in the script of Devanagari, Naskh, Nastalig, Tughra etc. Out the total 1095 seals includes the relevant records of the Persian Department of the Government of the English East India Company, and the ‘Mutiny Papers’ which housed in National Archives of India.
